FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Are all the coaches screened and certified?
Here at CGSL, the safety and well being of every child is of the utmost importance. Every volunteer coach in our league is required to complete the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic. We also require that at least one coach on every team be trained in the use of an "Automated External Defibrillator" (AED) and certified to administer CPR. Finally, each volunteer coach must also submit to a criminal background check.
my DAughter has never played softball before, does she need to tryout in order to join the league?
Each team at every level will have girls with varying degrees of skill and knowledge of the game. Prior to the beginning of the season, each girl that has registered to play in our league must attend a tryout/assessment clinic. On the day of the clinic each girl will be assigned a number and they will be given an opportunity to demonstrate their Hitting, Fielding and Throwing skills. Each girl will then be given an overall score by the league managers and coaches in attendance which is attached to their assigned number, not their name. These scores are confidential and are solely used by the league officials when assigning girls to different teams in an effort to create parity at every level. After all the girls have been assigned to a team, the managers of each team are then given a roster with the names of the girls assigned to their team along with the contact information of their parent(s)/guardian(s). Girls with limited or no previous softball experience will be instructed in the basic skills of the game to the best of their ability by their assigned team manager and their coaches during scheduled team practices.
if my daughter has a family member or friend who also plays, can I request that they be on the same team?
Requests to have siblings or friends play on the same team can be made by the parent or guardian during the registration process. Although we do our best to honor these requests, each request is evaluated by members of the board of directors and factors such as team parity are used to make the final determination.
Does my daughter need special equipment to play?
The minimum required equipment to play the game of softball is a "Batting Helmet with a face guard attached to it", A "Softball Glove" and a "Softball Bat". If possible, it is recommended that each girl have their own batting helmet and glove to accommodate proper fit and comfort. Each team coach will be assigned equipment that will include a minimum of 2 spare helmets and several spare bats that are available for use by any team member during the season. At times the league will also have a limited supply of gloves that were previously used and donated. You can request one of these gloves if they are available during one of our scheduled in person player registrations. For safety reasons we recommend that each girl playing above "Tee Ball" level also wear softball cleats which provide better running traction and stability. Does my daughter have to reside in clifton in order to play in this league?
In order to play in our league your daughter does not have to reside in Clifton. The only restriction for non-residents of Clifton is "All Star Team Tournament Play". In order for any girl to be eligible for selection to an all star team they must either be a resident of Clifton or attend school located within the boundaries of Clifton and approved by Little League Baseball. This is a rule that applies to all recreation leagues who adhere to Little League Baseball rules. are there any other fees that I have to pay in addition to the initial signup fee?
In order to raise necessary funds for the league, each family is required to either purchase 2 tickets to our annual "Beefsteak" scheduled for June 2nd at a cost of $100 ($50 per ticket) or pay the opt-out fee which is $50.00. There are no other additional monies required and this year we are NOT requiring parents to perform kitchen duty.
CAn I sign up to become a Manager or coach if I am interested?
A huge reason for the success of our league is the volunteers. If you are interested in managing or coaching a team, you can fill out an application in person at one of our scheduled sign-up/registration dates. You can also obtain a volunteer application form by clicking the link below titled, "volunteer application" . When you have completed the application, you can drop it off during one of our in person registration dates or you can scan the completed application along with the required identification documents and send them as an attachment in an email to us at info.cglls@gmail.com
